Fun Ways to Participate in 2010
There are still ways to participate in events scheduled for the year 2010. We all like to attend fun social events, but most of us also like to participate in the preparation. We enjoy getting together with others to set-up; do the decorating, cooking, activity preparation and even the clean-up. It is nice to visit with folks while doing a project. Conversation and activities help us to catch up with and get to know each other.
Each year GCA Board members get a calendar of events and who is in charge of each. We decided to adapt that a bit with the names of people you can contact (contact information is in your membership directory) to help out. That calendar is attached to this newsletter. Just think how much more fun it will be to chair/lead an event once members get in the habit of calling the chair to volunteer their time and skills rather than the other way around. One of the hardest things about chairing an event is that business of calling others for help. Some folks opt to do it all themselves rather than ask for help and get repeated "not this time" answers. Then they are worn out. Our theme dinners are great fun but very labor intensive for the cooks. So lets make it a GCA Member habit to "call and volunteer" rather than waiting for the call to be asked. Some folks do regular activities each year so we know ahead of time who is signed up for the following year. It is this kind of commitment that makes GCA a strong and lively organization.
Dont know what needs to be done? Just call and say "Im a lousy cook, but Ill do anything else." Or "I cant stay in the sun too long, but if there is a shady spot at the Water and Art Festival Id be glad to spend some time helping out." Or "My schedule doesnt allow me to participate during the usual event times but if there is a task that has some flexibility in timing I can do that." Can you stop on your commute and do some of the shopping? Are you good on a computer? Can you cook ahead and freeze some foods? Do you like to meet new people; meet and greet? Take tickets and count money? Have some artistic skill? Able to lift tables and chairs? The folks in charge will be able to help you choose an actual task and you will make their day!
Make it a habit! Make somebodys day! Call and volunteer!
S&P ROUND UP WAS A GREAT SUGGESTION
Thanks Karice & Tom for the great idea. Winners were announced and recognized for their donation of salt and pepper shakers. GCA still needs additional contributions. Those of you who were unable to donate at the last dinner have another chance to bring those unwanted white elephant S&Ps to the Mexican Fiesta.
GCA LOST & FOUND
GCA has a box labeled for all items that are either lost or found located in the storage room at the Horton Community Center. If you are looking for that pair of gloves or that rectangular casserole dish check the new location of the GCA Lost & Found when you attend the next event.

NEW GREEN ROUTINE
Lets share leftovers from our dinners with hungry neighbors. If you want to take any leftovers from any dinner events to hungry neighbors bring your own containers. This will be a new
"green routine" that keeps a community outreach project super simple. No committees, no chairperson, just building an already established GCA culture of community care.
THE SYSTEM: GCA DIRECTORY, NEWSLETTER AND EMAIL REMINDERS
We occasionally get questions about members not receiving a newsletter or email reminder for 2
nd Friday events. Heres how it works:1.
The Membership Chairs gather information from membership forms and manage the data base and publish the directory. They send email and USPS addresses to the Newsletter Editor. That person emails or sends the newsletter via USPS. If your information is correct in the directory then you know the glitch is with the Newsletter Editor. If it is not correct in the directory, then you would contact the Membership Chairs. (Editor: Judy Ross 360-427-4122, judybouquetross@aol.com or Membership: Sandy Carlson at 360-731-5335, theteacher@wavecable.com2.
Now if you want to receive reminders about events and are not, the system is the same unless you want a phone call. In that case you would contact Mernie Cain who is our Potluck and Phone Committee Chairperson (Mernie Cain at 360-275-7251)3.
For security purposes we do not share the contact information with anyone but the Membership and Newsletter folks. The only person you should be getting General/All Member GCA Emails or Newsletters from would be the Newsletter Editor. That person always identifies the message with GCA in the subject line. And lastly please check your junk mail box! That newsletter might be in there. :>)4.
One last note, if you are on a committee you would know who you would be receiving information from so be sure to allow your email system to accept messages from that person.Community meetings are scheduled by Mason County Commissioner Lynda Ring Erickson in an outreach effort for citizens in her district. Commissioner Lynda Ring Erickson invites the public to attend these informal meetings to exchange ideas and concerns so that she may better serve her constituents. She usually starts the meeting with an update on County activities such as budget news and road project information. If there are any questions, please contact the Commissioner's office at 427-6970 ext. 419.
The 2010 meetings are scheduled for every third month on the third Thursday of the month starting in February. All meetings will start at 7:00pm. The 2010 schedule is as follows:
May 20, 2010 August 19, 2010 November 18, 2010
Thank you for volunteering for our bi-annual Road Cleanup of the Grapeview Loop Road. Armed with hard hats, bright orange safety vests, gloves and sturdy boots we hit the road. The weather was in our favor although a little cold when we first began our task. Filling our sacks with road debris, bottles, cigarette butts, cans and other junk we walked the loop, returning to the Community Center with our find. If only folks would be more respectful of the environment we would be collecting less and enjoying our countryside more.
Thanks to coordinators from the Beachcombers Garden Club and Grapeview Community
Association for coordinating the Grapeview Loop Road Cleanup. Thank you, Paula Cimmery and
Pam Berger.
